This is Sri Lanka for travellers with one week and one chance. You will not see everything (Yala doesn't make the cut, and the coast gets one night), but you will see the things every first-time visitor should see: Sigiriya rock fortress, Dambulla caves, the Temple of the Tooth, the famous scenic train through tea country, the Nine Arch Bridge in Ella, and Galle Fort on the south coast. Compressed, but not rushed within any single day: you move regions daily but never race between sites. It works because the country is small (the whole island is the size of Ireland) and because your driver-guide handles every logistical concern.

• Day 1: Colombo Airport → Sigiriya
• Day 2: Sigiriya climb + Dambulla caves
• Day 3: Drive to Kandy, Temple of the Tooth in the evening
• Day 4: Kandy → train to Ella
• Day 5: Ella + Nine Arch Bridge, drive to south coast
• Day 6: Galle Fort + Mirissa beach
• Day 7: Drive to airport

The Moments That Will Stay With You

🏔️ Sunrise at Sigiriya. A 180-metre plug of granite that a 5th-century king, Kashyapa, converted into his fortress-palace. UNESCO listed. Get to the gate at 6:30 AM. Allow 45–75 minutes for the 1,200 steps; the first twenty minutes on top, before anyone else arrives, are what you climbed for.

🛕 Dambulla cave temples. Five caves, 153 Buddha statues, 2,100 m² of painted ceiling, and 22 unbroken centuries of Buddhist worship.

🙏 The Temple of the Tooth, Kandy. Houses a tooth relic of the Buddha. By tradition, the relic's keeper is Sri Lanka's rightful ruler. The 6:30 PM puja is the moment to be there, all drums, conch shells and chanting.

🚂 The blue train from Nanu Oya to Ella. For three hours the highlands slide past the open doors: tea estates, viaducts, eucalyptus, the occasional samosa seller. We book reserved 1st-class seats.

🌉 The Nine Arch Bridge at dawn. A twenty-minute walk from Ella town through the jungle. Two trains cross it in the early morning, around 6:30 and 9:00.

🏰 Galle Fort. A Portuguese fort of 1588 that the Dutch rebuilt in stone, now UNESCO listed. You have one afternoon, so we plan it carefully so you catch the ramparts at sunset.

What's Not in This Tour (and Why)

To be clear: this tour does not include Yala safari or proper south coast time. With seven days, you choose: see the Cultural Triangle, hill country, and train ride properly, OR drop one for safari and beach. We chose the cultural/scenic version because the leopards will still be there next time, but you only see Sigiriya for the first time once.

Why This Route, Not Another One

Most operators try to cram Yala into a 7-day tour. The result is two consecutive overnight drives and a sunrise game drive after four hours of sleep. We would rather you see five things properly than seven things while exhausted. Your driver-guide is also your safety valve. If you finish Day 3 ahead of schedule and want to add an extra Cultural Triangle site, he can rearrange.

• The itinerary is a framework. An extra night in Ella, a Kandy half-day swapped for a tea estate visit; just tell your guide.
