Ten days. The complete Sri Lanka experience, slightly compressed.
This is the trip for travellers who have a ten-day window and want to use every hour of it. You will see Sigiriya, climb to Dambulla, walk the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, take the famous train through tea country, watch leopards in Yala, and end with two nights on the southern coast. Nothing critical is skipped. The pace is brisker than the 12-day or 14-day, moving every other day, but the itinerary is engineered so that no day feels purely about the drive.
If you are landing on a tight schedule and want everything that makes Sri Lanka Sri Lanka, this is the most efficient version of it.

- Day 1: Colombo Airport → Sigiriya (~4 hr drive)
- Day 2: Sigiriya climb + Dambulla cave temples

The Moments That Will Stay With You
🏔️ Sunrise at Sigiriya. A 180-metre granite monolith, palace of the 5th-century king Kashyapa, UNESCO listed. Be at the gate at 6:30 AM; the first twenty minutes at the summit before the crowds arrive are why you came.
🛕 Dambulla cave temples. Five rock caverns, 153 Buddha statues, 2,100 m² of painted ceiling. In continuous use as a Buddhist sanctuary for 22 centuries.
🙏 The Temple of the Tooth, Kandy. Sri Lanka's most sacred Buddhist site. Go at 6:30 PM for the evening puja: drums, conch shells, chanting monks.
🌉 The Nine Arch Bridge at dawn. A twenty-minute walk from Ella town. A British-era stone viaduct built without a single steel beam. Two trains cross it in the early morning, around 6:30 and 9:00.
🚂 The blue train from Nanu Oya to Ella. Three slow hours across the roof of the island. Reserved 1st-class seats booked in advance.
🐆 Yala at first light. 979 km² of it, and one of the world's highest leopard densities. Dawn is when they move.
🐋 Whale watching at Mirissa (seasonal, Dec–April). One of the world's most reliable blue whale destinations. Dondra Point sits at the edge of a narrow continental shelf, and blue whales (up to 30 metres long, 200 tonnes) pass through these waters December to April with roughly a 90% sighting rate at peak. 🏰 Galle Fort. Portuguese-built in 1588, fortified by the Dutch, UNESCO listed.
Why This Route, Not the 12-Day or 7-Day
Ten days is a hard cap for "complete" Sri Lanka. Below ten and you start dropping the south coast or skipping Yala. The 7-day Highlights tour goes that route: leaner, more cultural, no safari. The 12-day Classic adds an extra night each at the Cultural Triangle and the south coast, which makes a real difference if you have the time. Ten days is what you book when ten days is what you have, and your driver-guide is the difference between a frantic ten days and a satisfying one.
