15 Day East Coast Sri Lanka — Trincomalee, Pasikuda and the Classics
About This Tour
Fifteen days. The classic loop plus the east coast, Sri Lanka's quietest and least-visited beaches.
This is the trip for travellers who have done the 14-day Classic, or read about it, and want something the brochure tours skip. You'll do the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the tea hills and the scenic train just like the 14-day. Then instead of looping back to the busy south coast, you cross east to Trincomalee and Arugam Bay: the empty beaches, the colonial harbour, the morning light no one else is awake for. Fifteen days is the right length: long enough to slow down on the east, short enough to fit a single annual leave window.

The Moments That Will Stay With You
🏔️ Sunrise at Sigiriya. King Kashyapa built his 5th-century palace on top of this 180-metre column of granite; UNESCO listed it in 1982. Arrive at opening, 6:30 AM. You get roughly twenty minutes of summit to yourself before the tour buses catch up.
🛕 Dambulla cave temples. Five rock caverns, 153 Buddha statues, 2,100 m² of painted ceiling, a Buddhist sanctuary in continuous use for 22 centuries.
🙏 The Temple of the Tooth, Kandy. The 6:30 PM puja is the moment to be there. Drums, conch shells, monks chanting, the gold casket briefly revealed.
🚂 The blue train from Nanu Oya to Ella. Reserved 1st-class seats. Three slow hours across the roof of the island.
🏄 Arugam Bay. A small fishing town on the southeast coast that turns into one of Asia's most renowned surf destinations from May to October. Even if you don't surf, A-Bay (as locals call it) is the kind of beach town where the day passes in fish curry, hammock, hammock, fish curry. Three nights lets you actually be there.
⚓ Trincomalee & Nilaveli Beach. The east coast's main town, with one of the world's great natural harbours (deeper than Sydney's). Fort Frederick on the headland; the Koneswaram Temple at its tip. Just north, Nilaveli Beach stretches for 4 km. White sand, calm water, Pigeon Island reef snorkelling 1 km offshore (a 30-min boat ride, blacktip reef sharks if you're lucky).
Why This Route, Not the 14-Day Classic
The east coast is the part of Sri Lanka most travellers never see, partly because of geography (it's a long drive from Colombo), partly old habit (the south coast is the default). What that means in practice: smaller crowds, lower prices, and beaches that look like the south coast did in the 1980s. The 14-Day Classic finishes on the south coast and is a wonderful trip; the 15-Day East gives you everything in the 14-Day plus a different ocean, three nights of A-Bay, and Trincomalee.
One caveat: the east coast has two seasons. May–September is dry on the east (high season). November–February is wet on the east (the south becomes high season instead). Your driver-guide will route smartly around the weather, but the right time of year matters more here than on the south coast.
