15 Day North and East Sri Lanka — Jaffna, Arugam Bay and Wilpattu
About This Tour
Fifteen days. The Sri Lanka most tours don't show you: the north and the east.
If you've already done the standard south-and-centre loop, or if you want to see Sri Lanka without the crowds, this is the trip. We skip the busy south coast entirely. Instead: Jaffna and the north (Sri Lanka's Tamil heartland, only opened to tourism after the 2009 end of the civil war, with a very different culture, food, and feel from the rest of the island), the east coast beaches at Trincomalee and Arugam Bay, and the Cultural Triangle in the middle. Fewer travellers, lower prices, and the parts of the country that take more curiosity to find.

The Moments That Will Stay With You
🛕 Jaffna. Sri Lanka's northernmost city, the cultural capital of the Tamil community, and one of the most distinctive places in the country. The Nallur Kandaswamy temple, painted in saffron and red, hosts one of the largest Hindu festivals in South Asia each August. The food is different here: kool (seafood soup), thosai, fierier curries. Day trips out to Nainativu and the Jaffna Islands feel like a different country.
🦩 Mannar Island. A long, flat, windswept causeway-connected island in the northwest. Famous for its baobab trees (planted by Arab traders centuries ago), its flamingo flocks (winter migrants), and its wild horses.
⚓ Trincomalee. One of the world's great natural harbours (deeper than Sydney's). Fort Frederick and the Koneswaram Temple on the headland. Just north, Nilaveli Beach stretches for 4 km of white sand, calm water, Pigeon Island snorkelling 1 km offshore.
🏄 Arugam Bay. One of Asia's most renowned surf destinations from May to October. Hammocks, fish curry, the kind of beach town where days dissolve.
🐆 Yala at first light. 979 km², with one of the highest leopard densities anywhere.
🏔️ Sigiriya & Dambulla. The 5th-century rock palace and the 22-century-old cave temples: your one cultural week before flying home.
Why This Route, Not the 15-Day East Coast Discovery
The 15-Day East Coast Discovery is the classic loop with the east coast bolted on: Cultural Triangle, hill country, tea train, east beaches. This 15-Day North & East skips the hill country and Kandy entirely, and instead goes north to Jaffna and the northern peninsula. Different country in feel: 1,000 years of Tamil culture, the legacies of 30 years of civil war, completely different food. Choose this if you've done the classic loop before or if cultural depth matters more to you than tea estates.
