About This Tour

This is the longest tour we offer, and it's not just "twenty-one days plus two more." It's a different kind of trip. You stay longer at every stop. You add two places no shorter tour reaches: Sinharaja rainforest (Sri Lanka's last great primary forest, a UNESCO biosphere) and the Knuckles Mountain Range (a wilder, less-visited hill country). And the recommended hotel pairings shift up a tier: the boutique tea estates, the Galle Fort heritage hotels, the safari camps that share their fenceline with the park. Twenty-three days lets Sri Lanka properly settle into you.

The Moments That Will Stay With You
🏛️ Anuradhapura. Sri Lanka's first capital, founded 4th century BCE, UNESCO listed. Sacred Bodhi tree said to have grown from a cutting of the original Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. It is the oldest documented tree on Earth (2,300 years).
🐆 Wilpattu & Yala. Two of the country's three great national parks. Leopards, sloth bears, elephants. Open-top jeep, expert tracker.
🏔️ Sigiriya & Polonnaruwa. The two great rock-art sites of Sinhalese kingship: the 5th-century palace and the 12th-century capital.
⚓ Trincomalee & Arugam Bay. Both east coasts, very different in feel: one historic harbour town, one surf village. Two nights each.
⛰️ The Knuckles Mountain Range. Named for the way the mountains look like a clenched fist. UNESCO biosphere. A guided trek through cloud forest with views over the central highlands and a homestay in a small village.
🚂 The blue train from Nanu Oya to Ella. Reserved 1st-class seats.
🌳 Sinharaja rainforest. Sri Lanka's last great primary lowland rainforest, a UNESCO World Heritage site and biosphere reserve. Home to 95% of the country's endemic bird species and the world's most concentrated mixed-species feeding flocks. A guided walk with a forest ranger is the way in.
🏰 Galle Fort. UNESCO listed. Two nights at one of the heritage hotels inside the ramparts.
Why This Tour, Not the 21-Day Grand Tour
The 21-Day Grand Tour is exhaustive, covering every major site and both coasts. The 23-Day Ultimate Luxury is the same destinations but with two adjustments. First, two new additions: Sinharaja rainforest (which most tours skip because it's a slight detour) and the Knuckles range (which most tours skip because it requires moderate trekking). Second, recommended hotel tier upgrades for the segments where they matter most: the tea estate stay, Galle Fort heritage hotel, Yala safari camp.
This is the trip for the second or third visit to Sri Lanka, or for travellers whose research has run deep enough to know that Sinharaja and Knuckles exist. If those names are new to you, the 21-Day Grand Tour will give you everything the brochures cover.
Good to Know
- Knuckles trek is moderate difficulty (3–4 hours, hilly but no technical climbing). Comfortable walking shoes essential.
- Sinharaja can be wet year-round. A light raincoat is in your kit; we provide leech socks.
- Best months overall: January, February, March; September, October.
- Your driver-guide is with you all 23 days. Private A/C vehicle. No coaches, no shared groups.
