The Moments That Will Stay With You

🏔️ Sunrise at Sigiriya. King Kashyapa built his 5th-century palace on top of this 180-metre column of granite; UNESCO listed it in 1982. Arrive at opening, 6:30 AM. You get roughly twenty minutes of summit to yourself before the tour buses catch up.

🛕 Dambulla cave temples. Five rock caverns, 153 Buddha statues, 2,100 m² of painted ceiling, a Buddhist sanctuary in continuous use for 22 centuries.

🙏 The Temple of the Tooth, Kandy. Houses a tooth relic of the Buddha. Go at 6:30 PM for the evening puja: drums, conch shells, chanting monks.

🚂 The blue train from Nanu Oya to Ella. Tea gardens, viaducts and eucalyptus forest roll past the open doors for three hours while samosa vendors work the aisle. We book reserved 1st-class seats; your guide meets you in Ella with the car.

🌉 The Nine Arch Bridge at dawn. A twenty-minute walk from Ella town through the jungle. A British-era stone viaduct built without a single steel beam. Two trains cross it in the early morning, around 6:30 and 9:00.

Five days is the minimum for "cultural triangle + hill country" without it feeling frantic. The 7-Day Highlights adds Galle and the coast at the end, which is wonderful if you have the days.
