About This Tour
Eight days. The wild Sri Lanka: rainforest, mountains, mist.
This is the trip for travellers who want trees more than temples. We swap the standard cultural sites for two of Sri Lanka's most extraordinary natural landscapes: Sinharaja, the country's last great primary lowland rainforest (a UNESCO biosphere), and the Knuckles Mountain Range (cloud forest, ancient villages, the wettest hill country in the island). Sigiriya and Kandy still feature (it would be perverse to skip them entirely), but the rhythm is different: dawn bird walks, leech socks, forest rangers, a homestay in a Knuckles village. You leave with a Sri Lanka most tour-goers never see.

The Moments That Will Stay With You
🏔️ Sigiriya. The 5th-century rock palace of King Kashyapa. UNESCO listed.
🛕 Dambulla cave temples. Five rock caverns, 153 Buddha statues, 22 centuries of continuous Buddhist use.
⛰️ The Knuckles Mountain Range. Named for the way the mountains look like a clenched fist. UNESCO biosphere reserve, designated a strict natural reserve for its ecological richness. Cloud forest, endemic species, ancient terraced villages where families still grow rice in the same plots their grandparents did. A guided trek through cloud forest takes 3–4 hours with views over the central highlands.
🏡 Knuckles village homestay. Simple, rural, real. Traditional clay-pot rice and curry cooked over a wood fire. Stargazing from the verandah. No Wi-Fi, very intentional.
🙏 The Temple of the Tooth, Kandy. 6:30 PM puja: drums, conch shells, monks chanting.
🌳 Sinharaja rainforest. Sri Lanka's last great primary lowland rainforest. UNESCO World Heritage. Home to 95% of the country's endemic bird species, including the famous Sri Lanka blue magpie and the red-faced malkoha. The world's most concentrated mixed-species feeding flocks are recorded here. A ranger-guided dawn walk is the way in.
🦋 The endemics. Sri Lanka is one of the planet's most concentrated biodiversity hotspots. On this tour you have realistic chances at the Sri Lanka frogmouth (a rare nocturnal bird), the purple-faced langur (an endemic monkey species), and, depending on the season, Sinharaja-only butterflies, frogs, and reptiles.

Good to Know
- Best months: January, February, March; July, August (Sinharaja can be wet year-round; that's the point).
- Knuckles trek is moderate difficulty (3–4 hours, hilly but no technical climbing). Comfortable walking shoes essential.
- Leech socks provided for Sinharaja. They are real and they are persistent.
- Knuckles homestay is simple: shared dining, basic but clean rooms, exceptional food. If you'd rather a hotel, we can substitute a tea-estate property.
