This is the trip for travellers who came for wildlife and the ocean and nothing else. No 4 AM Sigiriya climbs. No long inland drives. You land, head straight south, do a sunrise game drive in Yala, walk the ramparts of Galle Fort one afternoon, and otherwise lie horizontal on the beach with fish curry and a paperback. Nine days, two big experiences, no stress.
Your Route
- Day 1: Colombo Airport → drive to Yala (~5 hr); overnight at the park
- Day 2: Sunrise safari + drive to south coast
- Days 3–8: South coast: Galle Fort, Mirissa, Weligama
- Day 9: Late morning at the coast → drive to airport

The Moments That Will Stay With You
🐆 Yala at first light. 979 km² of coastal jungle with one of the highest leopard densities on Earth. Dawn is when they move. Sloth bears, wild elephants, mugger crocodiles and 200+ bird species fill the rest. You'll be in an open-top jeep with a tracker who reads the bush like a book.
🏰 Galle Fort. Built by the Portuguese in 1588, fortified by the Dutch through the 17th century, UNESCO listed and one of the best-preserved sea forts in South Asia. Inside the ramparts, it is still a living town: bakeries, mosques, churches, art galleries, schoolchildren cycling to class. Sunset from Flag Rock Bastion is the right way to end the day.
🐋 Whale watching at Mirissa (seasonal, Dec–April). About as dependable as blue whale watching gets. Dondra Point sits at the edge of a narrow continental shelf where the deep ocean is only a short boat ride away. Blue whales (up to 30 metres long, 200 tonnes) pass through these waters December to April with roughly a 90% sighting rate at peak. Add as an excursion in the booking calculator.
🏝️ Mirissa & Weligama beaches. Crescents of golden sand under coconut palms. Mirissa has the famous "Coconut Tree Hill" viewpoint and a small night market. Weligama is wider, calmer, and one of the best beginner surf beaches in Asia.

- Whale season runs December–April. Outside this window, we substitute a deeper day at Galle or a Bentota river safari.
