About This Tour

One day. Galle Fort, Mirissa beach, and (in season) whales. The south coast highlights from anywhere on the western coast.

This is the day trip for travellers based in Colombo, Negombo, or Bentota who want a real taste of the south coast without the multi-day commitment. We pick you up early, drive south on the expressway, and unpack the day around what you most want to see: Galle Fort always, Mirissa for the beach or (December–April) the whales, lunch somewhere worth the drive, back to your hotel by evening.

Your Day

• 05:30–06:30 Pick-up from your hotel (Colombo / Negombo / Bentota)
• 08:00–09:00 Arrive Galle; coffee in the Fort
• 09:00–12:00 Galle Fort walk: ramparts, Dutch Hospital, Lighthouse, art galleries
• 12:00–14:00 Lunch in or near the Fort
• 14:00–17:00 Drive to Mirissa: beach time, Coconut Tree Hill, optional Weligama surf check
• 17:00–19:30 Drive back to your hotel

If whale watching is the priority (December–April), the day starts earlier: pickup at 03:30, on a boat at Mirissa by 06:30, back ashore around 11:00, then Galle Fort in the afternoon.

What You'll See

🏰 Galle Fort. Built by the Portuguese in 1588, fortified by the Dutch through the 17th century, UNESCO listed and one of the best-preserved sea forts in South Asia. Inside the ramparts, it is still a living town: bakeries, mosques, churches, art galleries, schoolchildren cycling to class.

🏝️ Mirissa beach. The famous "Coconut Tree Hill" viewpoint, a small night market, and one of the south coast's most photogenic beaches.

🐋 Mirissa whale watching (seasonal, December–April). A stretch of ocean with famously consistent blue whale sightings. Dondra Point sits at the edge of a narrow continental shelf. Blue whales (up to 30 metres long, 200 tonnes) pass through these waters December to April with roughly a 90% sighting rate at peak. Sperm whales and spinner dolphins turn up regularly too. Add this as an option at booking.

Good to Know

• A long day, 13–14 hours door to door from Colombo. Not for the day after a long flight.
• The southern expressway makes this much faster than it used to be, about 2 hours each way from Colombo.
• Galle Fort is best walked, not driven.
• If whale watching is the priority, the December–April window matters; outside this, we skip the boat and focus on Galle and Mirissa beach.
