In the dry season, hundreds of wild elephants converge on the receding shores of Minneriya's ancient reservoir, one of the greatest wildlife spectacles in Asia, known simply as The Gathering. Even outside those peak months, this compact park delivers elephants in numbers few places on Earth can match.
The Experience
From a private 4x4 with an expert driver-tracker you'll skirt the great tank and its grasslands, watching herds feed, bathe and jostle, with the ancient rock of Sigiriya sometimes visible on the horizon. Photographers: the late-afternoon light over the reservoir is the shot.

- Morning safari 6:00 AM start (best for active wildlife) or afternoon safari 2:00 PM (best light for photography) · each lasts 3–4 hours.
