Whale and Dolphin Spotting in Mirissa

About This Experience
Meet the giants of the Indian Ocean.
The deep waters off Mirissa are among the best places on Earth to see the blue whale, the largest animal that has ever lived. Add sperm whales, fin whales and huge pods of spinner dolphins riding the bow, and this early-morning voyage is Sri Lanka's greatest wildlife lottery ticket.
The Experience
Departure is early, around 6:00 AM, when the sea is calmest and sightings are most frequent. The boat heads for the deep water beyond the continental shelf where the whales feed; the crew are experienced spotters and position the boat respectfully when they find them. Expect roughly 3–5 hours at sea depending on conditions and sightings, with the sunrise over the Indian Ocean thrown in for free.
Good to Know
- Morning departures only; that is when the ocean cooperates.
- 1–27 participants · beginner level.
- Prone to seasickness? Take a tablet 30 minutes before departure; the crew recommends it.
- Wildlife is wild: sightings are highly likely in season but never guaranteed.
