Why Sri Lanka for a Honeymoon
Most island honeymoons are one beach for ten days. Beautiful, and slightly the same by day six. Sri Lanka fits jungle, mountains, history and ocean into a country smaller than Ireland, so you wake up to elephants one morning, mist over tea hills the next, and turquoise sea on the third. Drive times stay short and the variety keeps the trip fresh from first day to last.

Your 10-Day Romantic Route
Day 1: Arrive in Paradise (Sigiriya)
Your driver-guide meets you at Bandaranaike International and the drive to the Cultural Triangle takes around four hours, through paddy fields and palm villages. Check in at your jungle hotel, find the pool for sunset, eat early, and sleep off the flight.
Day 2: Sigiriya at Sunrise and the Dambulla Cave Temples
You start before dawn, and it is worth the alarm. Sigiriya rises 180 metres straight out of the jungle, and watching the sun come up from the summit is one of those moments you will still be describing decades from now. King Kashyapa built his palace up here in the fifth century; the frescoes he commissioned are still on the rock face, sheltered in a gallery halfway up. After breakfast back at the hotel, on to Dambulla: five connected caves filled with 153 Buddha statues, ceilings painted in ochre and indigo, UNESCO listed and still an active temple. The afternoon is free to swim, nap, or book a couples' Ayurvedic massage; most hotels in this region have an in-house spa.
Day 3: To Kandy via a Spice Garden, then the Temple of the Tooth
Morning drive south through Matale, with a stop at a working spice garden where cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla and cloves grow in rows. The cooking demo teaches you a curry you will still be making at home years from now. Kandy, Sri Lanka's last royal capital before the British took it in 1815, sits cupped around its lake. The Temple of the Tooth holds Buddhism's most revered relic, and the evening puja, with drums, oil lamps and chanting monks, is one of the most quietly beautiful ceremonies in Asia. Day 4: The Most Beautiful Train Ride in Asia
Today the trip earns its stories. The blue train climbs from Kandy into the hill country over about five hours, and every hour outdoes the one before: tea hills, waterfalls, tunnels, and a viaduct where you lean out of the open carriage door for the photo every couple takes. We book your reserved seats in advance. Bring snacks and your camera. You arrive in tea country by late afternoon, check in to a tea-estate bungalow or boutique hotel, and take sundowners on the veranda as the mist rolls in.
Day 5: Tea Estates and Waterfalls
A slow, luxurious day in the hills. Morning at a working tea factory: the pluckers, the withering troughs, the rolling machines, and a tasting room where you learn why a proper cup of Ceylon Orange Pekoe costs what it does. Lunch at the estate. In the afternoon you pass Ravana Falls, named for the demon king of the Ramayana, and the Nine Arches Bridge near Ella, built of stone and Ceylon cement without a single steel beam during the First World War. Time it right and a train crosses while you watch. Back at the hotel, many hill-country properties will set a private candlelit table by the fire.
Day 6: Down to the South Coast
A long, beautiful drive, about five hours from 1,800 metres of altitude down to the sea. The landscape changes every half hour: tea, then jackfruit forest, then paddy, then suddenly palms and a first glimpse of ocean. Arrive at your beach resort by late afternoon for sundowner cocktails over the Indian Ocean, then a proper beach dinner with your feet in the sand.
Day 7: Galle Fort and Sunset on the Ramparts
Galle Fort is a walled port town surrounded by sea on three sides, founded by the Portuguese in 1588 and rebuilt in stone by the Dutch in the seventeenth century. Inside: cobbled streets, jewellery shops in old colonial houses, galleries, courtyard cafes. Wander all day. Pick up something beautiful, a moonstone or a sapphire or hand-stitched lace. Then come back as the sun drops and take dinner at one of the west-facing boutique hotels on the walls, the lighthouse glowing and the whole town gold. This is the photo you will frame.
Day 8: Pure Beach Day at Mirissa or Weligama
No driving, no itinerary. Beach, breakfast in bed, swimming, reading, naps, more swimming. The south coast has some of the cleanest sand in South Asia, soft white coves edged with coconut palms and water warm enough to stay in for hours. In the late afternoon, watch the stilt fishermen at Koggala balanced above the water. Sunset on the beach, a long dinner, no schedule.
Day 9: Whales, or a Second Beach Day
From December through April, blue whales and sperm whales pass through the waters off Mirissa, one of the most reliable blue whale grounds in the world, with sighting rates around 90% at the peak of the season. We can book you onto an early-morning boat with an ethical operator, back ashore by about 11 AM. Outside whale season, or if you simply want one more slow day: couples' massage, a cooking class, a long lunch with your toes in the sand. Farewell dinner somewhere with a sunset. Pack tonight while you are still glowing.
Day 10: Goodbye, But Not Forever
One last morning on the beach and breakfast with a view. The drive back to the airport takes around three hours from the south coast, and your driver-guide gets you there with time to spare. He will insist on taking one last photo of the two of you outside the terminal.

Best Time to Go
The south coast is at its best December through April: bright sun, calm seas, whale season at its peak. The Cultural Triangle and hill country work year-round, with the heaviest rain in November.
July to September is Green Season. The south coast sees occasional afternoon showers while the Cultural Triangle and east coast are at their best. The Green Season discount is applied automatically at checkout, and you will have many places largely to yourselves.
December to March is Peak Season. Sublime weather coast to coast; a peak supplement applies (it shows automatically in the price panel) and the best hotels fill three to six months ahead.
Before You Book
- Pace. This trip moves. Days 1 to 6 cover real distance; days 7 to 10 are pure beach to slow you down. If you want the whole thing slower, ask us to extend the beach end by two or three nights.
- Hotels. Luxury and Premium tiers both deliver beautiful properties. Premium means five-star boutique throughout, the kind of places with plunge pools and a chef who cooks for a handful of guests.
