5 Day Safari and Beach Sri Lanka — Yala Leopards and South Coast
About This Tour
Five days. Leopards at dawn, beach by sunset.
This is the trip for travellers who do not need temples and rocks; they came for wildlife and the ocean. Two safaris in Yala (dawn and afternoon, one of the world's densest leopard habitats), then south to Mirissa for whales (December–April) and Galle Fort for one rounded afternoon of culture. No temple climbs, no tea hills. You see two of Sri Lanka's most spectacular experiences (top-tier leopard safari and some of the most accessible blue whale waters anywhere) and end with feet in the sand.
Your Route
- Day 1: Colombo Airport → drive to Yala (~5 hr); overnight at the park
- Day 2: Sunrise safari + afternoon safari
- Day 3: Drive to south coast; afternoon at the beach
- Day 4: Mirissa whale watching (Dec–April) or beach day + Galle Fort sunset
- Day 5: Morning at the coast → drive to airport (~2.5 hr)
Private air-conditioned car and dedicated driver-guide throughout. Open-top jeep + tracker for both Yala game drives.
The Moments That Will Stay With You
🐆 Yala at first light. 979 km² of dry-zone scrub on the southeast coast, holding one of the highest leopard densities anywhere. Dawn is when they move. Sloth bears, wild elephants, mugger crocodiles and 200+ bird species fill the rest. You'll be in an open-top jeep with a tracker who reads the bush like a book.
🐘 The afternoon game drive. Different light, different animals. Elephant herds gather at the waterholes; peacocks display in the late sun. Two game drives in one day dramatically raises your sighting odds.
🐋 Whale watching at Mirissa (seasonal, Dec–April). Dondra Point sits at the edge of a narrow continental shelf where the deep ocean is only a short boat ride away. Blue whales, the largest animals that have ever lived (up to 30 metres long, 200 tonnes), pass through these waters December to April with roughly a 90% sighting rate at peak. Sperm whales and spinner dolphins often join the show.
🏰 Galle Fort. Portuguese-founded in 1588, Dutch-fortified, UNESCO listed. Inside the walls it is still a working town: bakeries, mosques, galleries, and ramparts made for sunset.
